Good day,
I am the member responsible for licensing and compliance at a hunt camp of 18 men in WMU 60.
In our opinion the “new” points based system is a major improvement over the previous system. The system is fair and reasonably simple to understand. It allows camps like ours to manage our points and tags in a way that meets our hunting objectIves. A lot of the negative comments are coming from people who have not taken the time to really understand the system. We urge the ministry to ignore these.
That said, the 3 recommendations that have been made (all relating to the 2nd allocation) seem sensible to us and we support them.
Another area that could be improved is to increase the transparency of emergency tag transfers. We had one experience with such a transfer and it went well. However there is still confusion among many hunters, with some thinking it’s impossible to transfer. Keeping in mind that transfers were a big irritant with the old system, we would not recommend lowering the bar. Transfers should be difficult and must be carefully vetted. One solution might be to have designated MNRF staff who investigate and deal with transfer requests fairly and quickly with direct contact with the hunters involved (applying a transparent set of criteria) and charging extra for the transfer to pay the extra staff costs.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
