Getting rid of the carbon tax is irresponsible and reckless. By doing so you allow big polluters to continue on without consequence. I understand the idea behind getting rid of the program is to save the tax payers money, but at what cost? There is no back up plan in the works that I am aware of, so to remove one of the only significant tools we have to tackle climate change at the moment just seems negligent. Sweden has had a carbon tax in place since 1991, and their carbon emissions have decreased by 26% without negatively effecting the economy (Second article). If this governments whole goal was to reduce gas prices you do not have to remove the entire cap and trade system, you can just exempt gas distributors from it (First article).
Not to mention the companies that have invested in the program, they now need to be reimbursed. As well as the federal government which the provincial government now plans on taking to court so they do not have to implement their carbon tax. Who is paying for all of this you ask? The tax payers of course. So much for all that money we're saving.
Removing cap and trade doesn't just effect the environment either. Since put in place, it has brought around $3 billion dollars into Ontario. How does this new government expect to make up for this loss of revenue? I know one of the Premier's favourite lines is "Ontario is open for business" however by scraping cap and trade you are doing the exact opposite.
