When I heard that Ontario was planning on cancelling their cap and trade regulations, I was in utter disbelief. The government was finally taking a huge leap forward to help provide a healthy and sustainable future, not just for Canadians, but for the entire world. I cannot believe that we are actually going back on a policy that is inherently designed to support innovation and reduce our reliance of fossil fuels and other dirty, old fashioned technologies. I recognize that it is not easy to adopt certain policies, and this is by no means an exception, but the planet has either surpassed, or is dangerously close to reaching the greenhouse gas limits before we start to experience extreme, irreversible, and catastrophic change. If we continue down this path, we are going to change the climate patterns of the earth to the point where the agricultural systems upon which we depend will change in unpredictable ways. There are thousands of other examples, but this one alone should be sufficient to make decision makers realize the damage they will be causing by revoking a cap and trade regulation.
Ontario made amazing progress in recent history in their rapid phase out of coal. Can't we continue this trend and go one step forward? We can prevent millions of climate change related deaths and provide a sustainable and healthy future for the young people in our lives that we care about. Please, Ontario. Reconsider this decision for the sake of humanity.
