The government must do something immediately to address the disasters caused by climate change. This year we saw huge costs to the province through wildfires which negatively impacted natural resources, tourism and health and caused significant costs for all the people of Ontario. We also saw another severe rainstorm events that almost resulted in people drowning in elevators in Toronto.
This week we again read the release of another international report that time is running out and that we must take immediate action to eliminate the use of carbon based energy forms by moving to the use of renewable energy. The proposed Bill 4 is exactly the opposite of what the government of the people should be doing if it really cares about the people of Ontario and the future of our children and grandchildren.
A move to a carbon tax and dividend model would return the funds raised to the people of the province and more than offset the increases they pay on carbon fuels.
The renewable energy sector is the fastest growth area of the economy, and this government has just alienated the entire industry. This will prevent thousands of people across the province from obtaining well paying jobs in this booming sector.
We also need to reinstate the incentives for electric vehicles and to spend money on the electric charging infrastructure required to support this move away from gasoline.
Additional funds need to be spent retrofitting the current housing stock in order to reduce the amount of carbon burnt to heat houses. Again this would return money to the pockets of the hard working people of Ontario.
