As a proud citizen of Canada and a resident of Ontario, I strongly support a price on carbon and reject Bill C-94. A carbon price is the most effective way to address climate change as it allows a market driven solution to help reduce our greenhouse gas footprint.
Ontario has a strong energy and petrochemical industry, the majority of which support a price on carbon. This is also reflected by the industry across the country through the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), the industry organization representing much of the energy sector. Their position is that “greenhouse gases from human activities are a significant contributor to climate change”. Many of the members, including Imperial Oil, Suncor, Shell, Enbridge are specifically advocating for a market driven solution. These companies recognize the impact of climate change and are in favor of a price on carbon.
Ontario has come a long way to implementing the carbon tax. Let’s not delete this progress that is taking our province in the right direction.
Below are quotes taken from the respective company websites describing their support for the carbon price:
IMPERIAL OIL
“Let market prices drive the selection of solution” “Imperial believes a revenue-neutral carbon tax would be a more effective policy option than cap-and-trade, regulations, mandates, or standards. A properly designed carbon tax can be predictable, transparent, and comparatively simple to understand and implement.”

SUNCOR
There remains a lot of uncertainty about the path forward in meeting global climate change goals and targets. Does Suncor still believe that setting a price on carbon is a critical first step forward?
The short answer is yes. We continue to believe that a broad-based carbon levy, equitably applied to both energy producers and consumers, is the most effective tool for advancing low-carbon technologies and encouraging smart energy choices. That’s why, in 2016, Suncor became a signatory to the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition, a volunteer initiative aimed at promoting the successful implementation of global carbon pricing.
We think a broad-based carbon price is the right answer.— Steve Williams, CEO of Suncor

SHELL
“Shell supports the establishment of government-led carbon “pricing” mechanisms that deliver a meaningful cost on CO2 emissions, necessary to create transitions to lower-carbon power and fuel options.”

ENBRIDGE
Enbridge supports carbon pricing as an important mechanism for influencing energy consumption and the achievement of Canada’s GHG emissions reduction goals. We believe pricing mechanisms drive the best outcomes – by providing incentives to businesses to invest in conservation and technology that reduce emissions, and to consumers to use energy more efficiently.
