I am deeply disturbed that the government is winding up a program that has widespread support among economists and other experts without providing evidence that it has any other effective means at its disposal to tackle the challenge of limiting our greenhouse gas emissions. Doing nothing is unacceptable - particularly in light of the report released by the UN this week. Having gone through the substantial pain of getting the cap and trade program implemented, the Province was well on its way to being able to deliver some reduction in carbon emissions. Now the government is effectively pushing out the date by which any kind of action will be taken, and without any assurance that it will find any solutions.
I am also very concerned that the government will be unable to avoid paying substantial compensation to purchasers of carbon credits, which will effectively wipe out any financial benefit to Ontarians of avoiding these taxes. This could well end up as a repeat of McGuinty's gas plant fiasco.
