Choosing to extend this moratorium is important as it will allow better analysis of how to protect Ontario's water resources.
Water is a crucial resource, and the way we use water will only be challenged more as Ontario's population grows, and as we start having to deal with the effects of climate change. Over-drawing our groundwater therefore is not only an issue for ecosystems, but could quickly create greater challenges for our agriculture, and ability to use water for (pretty much every single) industrial activities that need it.
Evaluating the impacts of drawing water for water bottling is an important step, but should also not be the only step. We need to have strategies that strongly protect our groundwater and surface waters, and strategies that reduce our overall water use, since we are one of the top three countries for water use per capita.
However, in the mean time increasing the length of the moratorium is a good idea.
