I have lost all trust in our elected officials to do what is best for the people who elected them. We must stop destroying the natural environments in exchange for mega highways that only encourage more and more vehicles on the roads instead of finding viable transit solutions that make sense.
With your newly tabled Bill 212, it is clear that your government will do anything to build the proposed Highway 413. You have no commitment to conducting the proper environmental assessments necessary to ensure that critical, fragile ecosystems, endangered and species at risk will be protected.
I feel that you must implement an environmental impact assessment to ensure that all species are protected from the destruction that will ultimately be caused by the construction of a thoughtless and expensive mega highway.
I also fear that the proposed Highway 413 will not alleviate traffic. In fact I believe it will do the opposite and increase the number of vehicles in the environmentally sensitive areas thus leading to the destruction of the natural environments that are needed to help reduce CO2 emissions and alleviate flooding (as we all know that paved highways don’t absorb rainwater).
The current expansive 400 series highways or the forever expanding QEW, despite the number of new lanes and expanded bridges, is in a constant state of gridlock and backups no matter what time of day. Meanwhile HWY 407 is currently under-utilized as it is not an affordable option for many. Let's find creative ways to utilize what is already built by taking back HWY 407 and creating a mega-transit system that connects all municipalities along its route.
Mega-highways are not the answer. Proper urban planning and a viable transit system to connect municipalities are what is needed to get people out of their vehicles and using transit.
Without proper environmental assessment and checks and balances, I do not trust that your government will do what is necessary to protect the natural environment that protect the people who elected you to do what is best for them.
Stop the destruction. Utilize the highways we have. Find transit solutions. Stop Bill 212, Stop Hwy 413.
