In response to the government's request for feedback on the principles and commitments that should inform the policy on natural gas, natural gas remains an essential part of Ontario’s energy future, particularly through the transition of energy that Ontario continues to see.
Importance of Natural Gas in Ontario's Energy System
Natural gas continues to play an integral role in ensuring a reliable, affordable, and competitive energy supply in Ontario. As the province navigates its energy transition, it is crucial that we recognize the need for continued investment in natural gas infrastructure to support long-term energy stability and affordability. This is especially important as Ontario's energy demand becomes less predictable due to the increasing impacts of climate change. With more extreme and frequent weather events, managing peak demand has become more challenging. Natural gas is currently the most reliable source of energy to manage peak demand, particularly during Ontario's summer and winter months when the electricity grid faces significant stress.
As Ontario moves toward increased electrification, including the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), it is essential that we take a balanced approach. If we shift too quickly toward full electrification without recognizing the continued value of natural gas, the electrical grid will face instability, potentially resulting in higher costs and an unreliable power supply. A hybrid approach, where natural gas complements renewable energy sources, ensures that Ontario’s energy system remains stable, resilient, and capable of meeting the needs of both consumers and businesses.
Pairing Transitions with GHG Reduction Strategies
Natural gas is a key part of a balanced energy mix that enables a realistic transition to a lower-emission energy system while maintaining affordability and reliability. It allows Ontario to take significant strides in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the short and medium term, without compromising the ability to meet growing energy demands. By utilizing natural gas alongside renewable sources, Ontario can achieve a gradual reduction in emissions while avoiding the disruptions that could arise from a rapid and unmanaged shift away from traditional energy sources.
Rational Expansion of the Natural Gas System
We fully support the government’s position that the Ontario Energy Board should ensure the rational expansion of the natural gas system. This expansion will support Ontario’s economic growth, enhance competitiveness, and ensure energy affordability for all sectors of the economy. Natural gas provides industries with the energy flexibility they need to operate efficiently, and as Ontario faces increasing energy demands, this flexibility will become even more critical.
To maintain energy reliability and competitiveness, it is essential that Ontario adopt an integrated energy resource planning approach that includes all available energy resources. This approach should allow industrial customers to have the flexibility to meet their energy needs within their budget and timelines, while ensuring the continued availability of natural gas as a reliable and cost-effective source of energy.
As a design consultant working heavily in the manufacturing industry, many clients continue to consider the energy impacts on the feasibility of their operations long term and see Ontario as an economic opportunity in these endeavors. we need to continue to be a sought-after place for manufacturing to call home
Natural gas remains a cornerstone of Ontario’s energy system, and its role will continue to be critical as the province works toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. It is essential that Ontario recognizes the importance of natural gas in maintaining energy security, reducing emissions, and fostering economic growth. As the province transitions, thoughtful investment in natural gas infrastructure will provide the necessary support to meet the energy demands of both today and the future, ensuring that Ontario remains a competitive and sustainable energy leader.
