Technology Advancements with Digital Signage

There are many advancements in digital displays over the past 5 years. During this period, advanced manufacturers like Ontario owned Media Resources have deployed many of the same techniques used in advance computer networks into digital displays. This means the signs are connected to an IP address allowing “network control” for rapid responses to any sign issues including automatic shutdowns. The new technologies include:

• Redundancy of all key components to ensure the sign has much fewer issues impacting the image quality including random flashings or aberrant behaviours
• Water and temperature proofing allowing more gradual aging of LEDs resulting in better quality images for longer periods of time
• Full security protocols similar to computer networks (two way encrypted data, IP white-listing, no open ports, full server based authentication) ensuring no improper images on the digital displays
• Rights management allowing public officials to leverage the digital displays for public safety and other alerts in a real time basis
• Optical down angle LED resulting in less night time light dispersion
• And much better control of brightness at night with multiple levels of control including
o Redundant photocells allowing control if one or all of the photocells fail
o Ability to default brightness if all photocells fail to a GPS location with time of day and time of year to control light
o And the ability to put default maximum brightness levels by hour of day in case all systems fail

Modern digital displays have many new safety features including the brightness controls mentioned above as well as mechanical features such as safety tethers on the modules and other removable items to ensure nothing falls from the digital display.

LED power consumption is about twice as efficient as it used to be. The average 14’x48’ billboard can now be run on a 100 amp service.
