This seems like an extremely poor political move with very little thought behind it. Currently, Ontario archaeology being done on the QEW has uncovered a Indigenous heritage site. If, when the QEW was being built, it was subject to an archeological assessment (which it SHOULD have been) this site could have been preserved and protected, and cared for by the correct Indigenous group of the area. Is there no respect for the Indigenous culture in Ontario? Just a few years ago we found mass graves - and now we are trying to remove the necessary step of assessment archaeology by allowing it to be overlooked if it suites political purposes? What are we in Ontario if not a product of our history? We can learn so much about Ontario's culture and history BECAUSE of archaeology and the good work these folks do every season. Ontario archaeology is NECESSARY and it is unreasonable that people be allowed to skip this assessment to serve a political agenda. Have Indigenous groups been consulted about this? If not, I strongly suggest this proposal be scrapped.
Archaeology in Ontario should not be ignored to serve a political point.
