As a passionate lover of nature, I strongly object to Bill 5. This bill would repeal Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, replacing it with a much weaker law that strips away meaningful protections for species at risk and their habitats.
Instead of relying on science, Bill 5 gives Cabinet the power to decide which species deserve protection, making these decisions political rather than evidence-based.
The bill also allows developers to bypass environmental reviews-just by submitting an online form, they could destroy critical habitats with no expert oversight or public input. Bill 5 would create “special economic zones” where provincial and municipal environmental laws no longer apply, putting entire regions at risk of unchecked industrial development and silencing community and Indigenous voices.
Nature and biodiversity are essential for healthy communities and a sustainable future. Bill 5 is a step backward that threatens Ontario’s wildlife, water, and democratic rights. I urge you to reject Bill 5 and stand up for nature and future generations.
