I am strongly against this proposed change. The result of changing the Endangered Species act as proposed will be that project proponents aren’t as likely to mitigate harm or protect and achieve an overall benefit to the habitat. All of the requirements for actually recovering species and creating new habitat, the number of individuals is swept away. Changing the definition of habitat, to one where proponents no longer register to protect the broader area species use, just the individual, completely upends what we know about how habitats and species protection works: that everything is integrated.
Bulldozing endangered species protections is only going to unleash more problems in the long run. Healthy forests and waters sustain all Ontarians, not just endangered species. A handful of developers will rake in short-term profits, leaving the bill for the rest of us. We all rely on a healthy environment for the air we breathe and the water we drink.
I cannot support a Bill that further erodes protections for the natural world for the short term privileging of a few. This is not a Bill that supports the future well being of our children and their world. Stop ravaging what is good and beautiful about the world we live in.
