I am writing to express my deep opposition to the proposed elimination of Ontario’s Endangered Species Act and the replacement with a weaker Species Conservation Act. This change represents a serious rollback in protections for some of our province’s most vulnerable wildlife, particularly endangered and threatened birds.

By limiting protection to only the “dwelling place” or nest, and removing legal safeguards for the broader habitats these species rely on—such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands—this legislation fails to address the core threats facing at-risk birds. Habitat loss is the leading driver of species decline, and relying on voluntary measures or federal intervention is insufficient and irresponsible.

Ontarians value the natural heritage of this province, and we have a responsibility to ensure that future generations can experience the rich biodiversity we enjoy today. I urge the government to maintain strong, enforceable habitat protections and uphold the principles of conservation science, not undermine them.

Please prioritize real and meaningful protections for endangered species by keeping the Endangered Species Act in place and rejecting this harmful proposal.
