Environmental Assessment Branch

Dear Assessment Branch,

I am writing to express my opposition to the portion of the government’s proposed Bill 5 that would include revoking Ontario Regulation 284/24 which would require a full and comprehensive Environmental Assessment of the property at 29831 Irish School Road, Dresden, ON.

My concern is how the water will be negatively affected if York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. is allowed to begin landfill operations and expand waste handling, processing and transfer operations less than 0.8km from the town of Dresden, ON.

There will be run off into Molly’s Creek which flows to the Sydenham River and onto the St. Clair River. My two boys enjoy fishing in the creeks and Sydenham River at Dresden. What type of contaminated water will they be fishing in? We know the Sydenham River is one of the most species rich rivers in all of Canada. There are already plenty of Species at Risk. There is no guarantee that this proposed dump expansion will not pollute the creeks and river. An Environmental Assessment would study the impacts on the area. An EA is needed!

I am also concerned about my neighbour’s water wells. There are wells and houses right at the dump’s boundary. We know from past experience how the drinking water from water wells is negatively impacted when we begin digging, expanding and hauling in polluted trash. An EA would study this and give us accurate information to make informed decisions.

Please do not include the repeal of Ontario Regulation 284/24 within Bill 5. Please continue to require a full Environmental Assessment for any use of the property at 29831 Irish School Road, Dresden as a landfill, recycling facility and/or waste facility. Please protect Molly’s Creek, the Sydenham River and the species that live there, as well as the water wells, by continuing to require a full and comprehensive Environmental Assessment.

Thank you for your time and attention to protecting our water.
