As a student/emerging professional in the heritage field, this bill's approach to regulation and protection is very concerning. While development is an important goal in our province, and indeed across Canada, archaeology and heritage are also important pursuits.
Our historical resources are non-renewable, and cannot be replaced once eliminated or damaged in construction. This is particularly poignant for Indigenous history, which should be a priority in light of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Moreover, archaeology and heritage is an industry that employs thousands of workers in the province. This bill seeks to reduce necessary archaeological assessments, thereby also reducing the employment available in this sector.
Rather, the provincial push for development could advance historical knowledge and cultural appreciation in the province through the necessary assessments and research.
