As an archaeologist it's disheartening to see these proposed changes, not only does it remove credibility from the provincial government, but it is damaging to the people of Ontario, indigenous and settlers alike.
We've built over many indigenous and historic sites over the course of history in this province and to see legislation put forward that could mark a return to "business as usual," when it comes to construction projects is upsetting. I've worked on roadside construction sites and discovered large indigenous sites with burial components as well as work beside houses that are on-top of indigenous features and I would hate to see a future where we disregard the mistakes of the past. Archaeological and Environmental Assessments are necessary, they are a cost of doing business in this province that should be shouldered by developers who will see a return on investment once these assessments are carried out, and at times they are the bare minimum to prevent development that resembles colonization in this province.
It is in good faith that I believe the provincial government will not pass this bill and I hope that Ontario will see a way forward that considers all peoples and the environment.
