I strongly oppose Bill 66, the "Open for Business" Act. I recognize that Ontario needs affordable housing close to transit, schools, hospitals and workplaces. I understand that provincial and municipal data show that there is over 125,000 hectares of land that could be developed within urban boundaries, enough to fill projected needs beyond 2040. There is no evidence of a land shortage. Opening up our precious green spaces -- forests, watersheds and farmland -- seems completely unnecessary and would lose forever our opportunity to contain the GTA's urban sprawl. During the election campaign, Doug Ford promised the people of Ontario that he would maintain the Greenbelt. I urge him now to keep that promise. I know that the pressures on politicians from sprawl developers are immense, but this is a time to think of future generations and to preserve and enhance our green spaces and watersheds, not harm them.
