I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed changes under the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, which would exempt the Eagle’s Nest Mine project from comprehensive environmental assessment.

This mine is located in the ecologically sensitive Ring of Fire region, home to vital wetlands, Indigenous communities, and critical species habitats. Weakening or removing environmental oversight in this area poses unacceptable risks to Ontario’s biodiversity, water systems, and the health and rights of First Nations communities who have not provided free, prior, and informed consent.

A comprehensive environmental assessment is not red tape — it is a fundamental tool for responsible development, transparency, and environmental stewardship. If this project is truly in the public interest, it should be able to withstand rigorous environmental scrutiny.

I urge the Ontario government to uphold its environmental responsibilities and retain the comprehensive assessment process for the Eagle’s Nest Mine. Economic growth must not come at the cost of irreversible environmental harm and the violation of Indigenous rights.
