I am writing regarding the proposed amendments to the Mining Act 1990, Electricity Act 1998, and Ontario Energy Board Act 1998, to protect Ontario’s Economy and Build a More Prosperous Ontario.
Creating a single, coordinated permitting system for a class of projects may benefit Ontario. I am not familiar with the permitting system and do not feel qualified to provide meaningful commentary about it. I am writing in support the following text in the ERO: "Any service standards prescribed by the LGIC would not apply to the time required for: any efforts by the Crown to fulfil the duty to consult with Aboriginal communities after the consultation has commenced; the proponent to complete its application and satisfy requirements; the time to complete the environmental assessment requirements; and land disposition requirements or processes under the Mining Act and any other Act." It is critically important that the Crown has sufficient time and resources to consult with Indigenous communities and for the proponent to complete the environmental assessment. Thank you for including this.
I further request that service standards not be prescribed during the review the environmental assessment. Government specialists, Indigenous communities, and affected stakeholders must have sufficient time to review environmental assessments to ensure that the outcomes are adequately balance the costs and benefits to all affected parties.
