I am completely against some of the suggested plans under Bill 5 “Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act”.
This new Act threatens every aspect of Ontario life, because it gives the you, our Premier and Cabinet the power to declare any part of Ontario a "Special Economic Zone" where no rules, Acts, Regulations, Instruments (such as municipal by-laws) or conditions apply to "designated projects".
As well, Bill 5 will wipe out Ontario's award-winning Species Conservation Act and replace it with legislation which
allows as yet unnamed government-appointed individuals (developers maybe?) to decide which species deserve protection (currently an independent arms-length committee does this)
limits species habitat protection to the "critical root zone" of an endangered plant or the occupied nest or den of an endangered animal
wipes out the need to obtain a permit before destroying endangered species' habitat: now all you have to do is tell the government you're going to do it
abandons all government efforts and responsibility for recovery strategies for endangered species
While it is admirable to “unleash our economy” this Bill 5 will do it at the expense of several things that make Ontario a special place to live. There HAS to be checks and balances and Bill 5 removes them.
