I strongly oppose the termination of comprehensive environmental assessments for the proposed Eagle’s Nest Mine and the Dresden Dump. Environmental assessments provide important information on the impacts of planned developments to the public, First Nations, and government decision makers. Not assessing the cost benefits of these projects and the potential harm they could cause is in a warming climate is irresponsible. The Eagle’s Nest mine, located in the James Bay lowlands, will be constructed with in a massive carbon sink. Disrupting this environment could potentially release thousands of tons of methane into environment. Without a comprehensive environmental assessment no-one, government included, will know whether the benefits outweigh the costs. This is not how government should be run. It is certainly not how businesses operate.
