We represent the Toronto East End Climate Collective (TEECC), a non-partisan group of individuals working to understand the causes of the climate crisis and who advocate for constructive responses.

The Special Economic Zones Act is a destructive response. It would grant the government extreme new powers to ignore our existing laws which protect our environment, our public & occupational health, and our labour and Indigenous rights. This new power will allow the Cabinet to opaquely create “Special Economic Zones” with “trusted proponents” and selected “projects” whose activities will take place without oversight, without accountability and without liability.

This Act will allow destructive developments to move ahead. It weakens Indigenous consultation, threatens our water sources, and jeopardizes local farmland and wildlife.

Removing oversight and accountability for “projects” denies responsibility for stewardship of air, water, soil, and wildlife. We must not deny it - we must fulfil our duty to future generations.
