This is a comment on ERO 025-0391, Special Economic Zones Act, 2025
This Act has no guardrails to protect the people of Ontario from government overreach and cronyism.
We cannot give permission to the government to designate Special Economic Zones (SEZs) without knowing precisely what criteria the government would use to judge an area deserving of that status. These criteria cannot be determined and changed on an ad hoc basis. We would likewise need transparency in the criteria the government would use to vet projects and contractors privileged to work in these SEZs. The people of Ontario would need to know in advance of passing the legislation, specifically which permits, processes, approvals, or other requirements the government wishes to waive or alter and in what ways.
I do agree we need to extract important minerals from the Ring of Fire area but we won’t give up our democracy in order to do that.
