I am writing to strongly oppose the proposal to remove the Environmental Assessment (EA) requirement for the Dresden landfill in Ontario. The EA process exists to ensure that projects with potential environmental and community impacts are subject to thorough review, transparency, and public accountability. Eliminating this requirement sets a dangerous precedent and undermines public trust.
The Dresden community, local ecosystems, and future generations deserve the protection that a full EA provides. Without it, there is no formal mechanism to assess risks to groundwater, air quality, or the health of nearby residents. There is also no opportunity for meaningful public consultation or independent scientific review.
Landfills are long-term liabilities, and their environmental impacts can last for decades. Skipping an EA increases the risk of irreversible harm and ignores the growing need for responsible waste management that prioritizes public and environmental health.
I urge the government to maintain the EA requirement for the Dresden landfill and ensure that any decisions regarding waste infrastructure in Ontario are made transparently, responsibly, and with full community input.
