Changes to the Ontario Heritage Act that may override archaeological consultation of potentially significant Indigenous and historic sites, will be detrimental to the environment, the conservation/understanding of this land’s past, and relationships with Indigenous communities that deserve the minimum of being consulted as a form of Truth and Reconciliation. While adjusting Ontario’s infrastructure to address population changes such as a need for more LTC facilities and housing is important, this is not the solution. For one example, adequately addressing the numerous vacant properties and abandoned projects is a potential step in the right direction. If there is a wish to build on untouched land, this should be done in an interdisciplinary and collaborative way — collaboration with Indigenous communities, planners, environmental scientists, and more. Collaboration is key in building strong communities, where all perspectives are heard and respected. I urge the province to re-think the importance of heritage conservation, and to consider all perspectives of this discussion. Thank you.
