I've lived in the Wasaga Beach Area for virtually my whole life.
I have lots of fond memories of the beach and spending time there as a kid.
Plovers were a more recent addition to my life. I heard from a close friend that there were these little birds who made nests on the beach, beaches that already struggled through public debates on dune restoration and anti-raking policy. Beaches already hard fought for for what little environmental protections they had.
Piping Plovers are tiny animals.
When they're chicks they look like cotton balls with legs.
I think more people should be given the opportunity to learn about these delightful creatures which will never happen if Ontario loses them.
There used to be more breeding areas for these birds in Ontario but human activity has ruined those sites already. Once something is gone there's no getting it back. Something that's easily learned at the beaches I spent my childhood playing on.
Plover habitat needs to be protected and so I'm calling on our government to deliver, to oreserve this species for years to come, so that we can continue to share our beach with these adorable little birds.
