Hello,
My family love Devils Glen area, it's a special spot and our family has started climbing here this year. We live on Collingwood and climb at the other local areas like Baldy and Metcalfe. My wife and I started climbing in the 90's off and on for about 10 years, we moved out west in 95 and returned in 2001. We stopped climbing while raising our two kids as they got into team sports in summer and winter. Our children are now young adults and most of those team sports are not available, too hard on joints or not the same amount of fun (soccer, baseball, hockey), so as a family we all got into rock climbing (again for us parents). Rock climbing has given us all a new form of physical activity, meeting new friends, helping release or escape stress and give a mental break or challenge that is so good for all of us!! I have been surprised at how nice and respectful all the rock climbers are these days, when I started back in the 90's I felt the crowed, was either really nice and respectful or were too into themselves, too cool, too macho etc., but thankfully I dont see that anymore.
We (my family) are outdoor people and love nature. I have a degree in plant life, tree identification and care etc. and we are all very responsible and respectful of nature, especially at these rock crags. Last year we joined a local volunteer group who went out and cleaned up the crag at Metcalf on earth day. There really wasn't much litter and when we were done there was zero. The rock climbing crowd are very much for the environment, they love nature and preach keeping it clean, leave no trace, pack out what you pack in and it's great to see.
My mom and grandparents farmed these hills just a km away south of the Glen and we have the utmost respect for the area. We absolutely love that we can now enjoy, as a family climbing in a special area that is beautiful and has so much history in the area and in my family. It's one of few sports that you can do together as an adult family.
We fully support formalizing climbing while protecting nature. I have formal training in plant identification, care and maintaining a healthy environment and rock climbing has one of the lowest impacts on nature of any activity. Climbers are very respectful of these special areas and always see climbers taking care of the area and education next generations or new climbers. In a world of so many restrictions and home or commercial development into the woods, we need these areas to enjoy and appreciate nature, to relax, unwind and do an actively like rock climbing that is so good for the mind, sole and fitness with very low impact on nature.
I really hope we can secure Devils Glen and other areas (parks) for rock climbing, while keeping it beautiful and allowing people to enjoy a healthy and clean/low impact activity.
