Although I typically support all outdoor sport pursuits, I cannot support the allowance for climbing within Devils Glen Provincial park. It’s well known that the cliff habitat within the park is a very unique and rare habitat that is home to many ANSI features- this has been shown by studies by Ontario parks staff ecologists. Allowing climbing on these areas contradicts the conservation mandate of Ontario Parks.
I also struggle to find credibility in the demonstrated aggressive approach to access that the climbing community has shown, and the tacit acquiescence of Ontario Parks management that allows the climbing community to carry on unacceptable practices within the park. Many other user groups have far more sincere interest in preserving park features, and those groups should be encouraged, not drowned out by the loudest or best lobbied interest.
In summary, rock climbing within Devils Glen should not be allowed as an exception in this management review given the sensitive ANSI features, and the demonstrated actions and attitudes of the climbing community thus far.
