strongly support the proposed inclusion of rock climbing as a permitted recreational activity in Devil’s Glen Provincial Park. The park’s unique escarpment and gorge features make it an exceptional climbing area, and with proper management, climbing can coexist harmoniously with the park’s ecological and cultural heritage values.

Rock climbing offers significant benefits, including:
• Environmental stewardship: The climbing community has a long track record of partnering with land managers to protect sensitive habitats, maintain access trails, and promote Leave No Trace principles.
• Health and wellness: Climbing encourages physical activity, problem-solving, and connection with nature, aligning perfectly with Ontario Parks’ goals of providing high-quality recreational and educational experiences.
• Economic and community value: Climbing tourism brings positive economic contributions to surrounding communities through local businesses, guiding services, and accommodations.

I encourage Ontario Parks to work with organizations like the Alpine Club of Canada, Ontario Alliance of Climbers, and local climbing groups to establish sustainable guidelines for route development, seasonal closures for wildlife, and environmental monitoring. This collaborative approach will ensure Devil’s Glen continues to thrive both as a protected natural space and as a world-class climbing destination.

I fully support the boundary expansion and classification change to “natural environment” as it better reflects the park’s ecological significance. Allowing climbing in designated areas, with clear policies for stewardship, will strengthen the balance between conservation and recreation.
