It’s unbelievable that the double-crested cormorant is being considered for reclassification in Ontario as a game bird for the purpose of, effectively, exterminating them. And extermination it will be, given that anyone with a small game license can kill them during the proposed hunting season from mid-March to December 31. On a personal level, I enjoy birding and am aghast at the thought of having to avoid areas frequented by these cormorants (along with herons) for eight and a half months of the year. More importantly, the proposal is not based on studies showing a need for a hunt, but as a response to certain groups that have lobbied for a hunt, and that’s shameful. Shouldn’t our natural resources be managed on scientific evidence to ensure their sustainability?7
