The Central Algoma Land Trust welcomes the addition of new protected areas across Ontario and strongly supports the proposal to establish Hay Marsh Provincial Park. Hay Marsh is recognized as a provincially significant wetland that provides essential habitat for numerous species at risk, including black terns and least bitterns. The proposed protection of an additional 195 hectares will make an important contribution to the long-term conservation of these species and the ecological integrity of the broader landscape.
This proposed provincial park also complements the existing conservation initiatives of Ontario Nature and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, both of which have worked to safeguard portions of the Hay Marsh. The establishment of Hay Marsh Provincial Park would therefore enhance the effectiveness of ongoing conservation efforts, strengthen habitat connectivity, and contribute to the province’s goals for biodiversity protection, climate resilience, and the preservation of Ontario’s natural heritage.
