As this proposal is known to be a category 3, under which the government declares it to be critically harmful to the environment, I can not agree that it should go ahead. The proposal has acknowledged that it will use excessive amounts of water (5 million liters per day over ten years) and as it will use that water to wash the gravel causing severe damage the aquifers. My family, as well as millions of families like mine, the farms and businesses, use the water from these same aquifers.
Strada has also applied to dig below the water table, using explosives to extract the material that is not needed for future growth in Ontario and that will spread particulates to the east for kilometers. These particulates are know to contain carcinogenic materials. With the prevailing winds they will spread over a large and densely populated area, an area in which I live, and includes Masonville, Mansfield (with two new developments planned,) Alliston, and Canada Base Borden.
If the government allows Strada to continue with this operation, what measures does the government plan to implement to protect this vitally important resource and the population?
I and perhaps thousands of Ontarians like me are strongly opposed to the expansion of this quarry.
