Maintaining and enhancing Ontario’s biodiversity is very important to members of the Niagara Falls Nature Club. We are very concerned that some provisions of Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, will diminish biodiversity.
The Species Conservation Act, 2025 will repeal the ESA. The ESA should have been strengthened but this act weakens it, especially with its restricted definition of habitat. The definition of habitat should be that which was included in the Endangered Species Act, 2007. This definition of habitat included “the area on which the species depends, directly or indirectly, to carry on its life processes such as reproduction, rearing, hibernation, migration or feeding, and included places in the area ----- that are used by members of the species as dens, nests, hibernacula or other residences.”
Please amend this bill to include a strong definition of habitat which ensures a species’ ability to move through the landscape for its survival and for species to complete their life cycles.
