As a resident of teh City of Toronto, I am outraged at the overreach of the provincial government in our municipal affairs. Specifically, in this instance (and there are many) the issue of bike lanes. There are otheres, but I will address this one first.
I am not a cyclist: I am a pedestrian and a driver. As a driver I welcome bike lanes, which keep both me and cyclists safe. An increase in cycling means a decrease in vehicles on the road, and thus a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
As a pedestrian, I am also a transit rider. Again, improved public transit reduces car traffic. I was thrilled that the City adopted priority lanes on Bathurst and Dufferin, which affect me personally. The right of way streetcar in my neighbourhood has made an immense difference for TTC riders.
The wording in your bill is so broad that it will not just impact bike lanes and bus priority lanes, but also patios, school streets, and other street improvements that rely on reallocating space.
What on earth does the provincial government have against this city?
