Bill 60 is a deeply troubling piece of legislation that strips Ontario’s cities of their ability to make local, evidence-based decisions about their own streets. It overrides the authority of municipalities—even when projects are strongly supported by residents, backed by data, and designed to make communities safer and more livable.
This bill will worsen, not improve, traffic congestion. The government’s own transportation experts have made it clear that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock—yet Bill 60 uses this false narrative to justify taking power away from local governments.
By making it harder to build protected bike lanes and other safety measures, Bill 60 will make Ontario’s roads more dangerous for everyone: people biking, walking, and driving alike. It also threatens the kinds of street uses that communities depend on, from transit priority lanes and safe school crossings to patios and curbside access for local businesses.
At a time when Ontario should be prioritizing climate action and public health, this bill does the opposite. It locks cities into outdated, car-dependent street designs that increase emissions, air pollution, and collisions.
Ontario’s cities deserve the freedom to design safer, healthier, and more efficient streets. Bill 60 must be withdrawn.
