Hi,
I am writing in opposition to this bill, which seeks to allow the Province to ban any reduction of motor vehicle lanes for bike lanes.
This is getting quite old. We know that bike lanes do not cause congestion, and the government's own experts have confirmed this. Protected bike lanes also prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.
I cycle a lot on Dundas and College, streets without dedicated, protected bikes lanes, and I can say that every trip is dangerous. I've almost been hit and doored several times and witnessed other cyclists experience the same. My fiance uses Bloor and University frequently and those bike lanes are a game changer: Safer and they induce more people to cycle.
We need to build for the city we want, not the city we have. What we have is car-caused gridlock, deteriorating roads and dangerous streets. There is a finite amount of space and more cars is just not possible. We need alternative methods of transport that are safe and economic. We need more protected bike lanes - not less.
Moreover, the city has committed to densifying the city with missing middle housing and apartment buildings with more bike parking and less car parking. This is how we build safe, vibrant, street-level cities that people can enjoy - not just drive through.
Thank you.
