Bill 60 rests on a flawed premise that dedicating all available road space to cars improves mobility. In practice, widening or preserving excess lanes often creates flow turbulence—more points of conflict, more signal phases, and longer cycle times that slow traffic for everyone.
Reallocating space for transit, cycling, and safer crossings can actually smooth vehicle movement by simplifying intersections, reducing random lane changes, and shortening signal cycles. Far from being an anti-car measure, these projects often produce steadier travel times and less stop-and-go driving, improving conditions for motorists and other users alike.
I urge the government to reverse course on Bill 60 and allow municipalities to use evidence-based street design to achieve better outcomes for all road users.
