I do not think this is a good proposal. The main reason is that this kind of planning should remain at the municipal level. There could be all sorts of local situations, perhaps even a road that is being underutilized, and the local government who knows the situation best should be able to make the decision. The local government can also weigh the needs of the people who live in that neighborhood as well as other people who travel through, whereas the province seems to place greater priority at times on the needs of people travelling though a location.

I am also concerned about the way the environmental impacts are framed. It is true that traffic creates pollution, which is why we need more alternative options to driving. This would free up road space for delivery drivers and others who need to be on the road. The congestion created by removing a lane needs to be weighed against the bigger picture, and the answer might be different in each case. Again, this should be up to the municipality to understand the nuance of local needs.

This proposal will limit our ability to test out new ways of using our shared road space and finding what works best for everyone to move people and goods around. We do not need this provincial legislation.
