I am writing in strong opposition to the proposal that would allow sewage or wastewater to be deposited into the river that flows through Batchewana territory—a waterway our community relies on for fishing, cultural practices, and the wellbeing of future generations.
There are significant and well-known risks associated with introducing any pollutants into a freshwater ecosystem. Even when proponents claim they will follow regulations, these standards only reduce environmental harm; they do not eliminate it. Any level of contamination—no matter how small—can cause long-term impacts on vegetation, aquatic life, wildlife, and the health and safety of our children and future generations. These parts of the natural world cannot speak for themselves, so we must.
Searchmont Resort, owned by Wisconsin Resorts Inc., is an American corporation operating for profit. Their expansion plans should not come at the cost of our clean water or our inherent rights. It is deeply concerning that they are seeking approval to dispose of their waste into a river that is central to Batchewana’s way of life. Even more troubling is that they have not engaged with Batchewana First Nation at all, nor has our government made any public announcement or ensured meaningful consultation.
I want to be clear: I am not opposed to development or expansion. I am opposed to environmental regulations that allow corporations to pollute our lands and waters—lands that are protected by our responsibilities as Indigenous people. I am not willing to accept pollution in any amount. “Parts per million” still means pollution, and it is unacceptable.
Batchewana must be the one to determine how our lands and waters are protected. We have the responsibility and the right to shape our future and safeguard the environment we depend on.
I urge the Ontario government to reject this proposal and uphold its duty to protect the land, the water, and the rights of Indigenous communities.
