No Ontarian should be at all shocked by Doug Ford's overhaul of the elimination of our province's Conservation Authorities. He has been militantly hostile toward environmental concerns since taking office, doing everything in his power to undermine conservation stewardship since 2018.
Environment Minister Todd McCarthy states that this government is "committed to ensuring they remain strong, effective and ready to meet today's challenges.”
“The proposed areas for the seven new regional conservation authorities will be better aligned with natural watersheds...” and that over 100 municipalities are currently within multiple conservation authorities' boundaries and are subject to different rules and processes.
That's because our current conservation authority boundaries are already based on existing watersheds, where water naturally flows, rather than municipal borders.
What the PCs are saying contradicts the real reason this is happening, and that is to expedite building and development permits on environmentally sensitive lands. That is their top priority!
Climate change is a major global issue, and our CAs are our front-line defence against natural tragedies like Hurricane Hazel in 1954, which led to the establishment by a REAL progressive premier, Leslie Frost, of Conservation Authorities, which are needed now more than ever!
Dealing effectively with climate change has to be the TOP priority of any tinkering to 'improve' the operating process of our CAs.
So Minister McCarthy is either ignorant or lying outright when he says that CAs will continue to “remain strong, effective and ready to meet today's challenges.”
With this myopic thinking, there will be less oversight from conservation experts and more power to Ford insiders, namely his development cronies, under the guise of protecting and conserving our natural resources.
At this rate, the number of CAs will eventually be eliminated, leaving only the politicized Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency, where environmental stewardship will be a distant second, at best, on the list of objectives of this proposed agency.
To the crustaceans that are the PC caucus, please grow a spine and oppose as strongly as possible, because this action will continue to cripple and eventually castrate our Conservation Authorities.
