Local conservation authorities are crucial for managing watersheds, protecting communities from floods and erosion, ensuring clean drinking water, conserving biodiversity, and providing vital education and recreation, acting as local experts for sustainable development and natural resource management within specific regions. They bridge the gap between provincial mandates and local needs, managing natural hazards, offering stewardship programs, and advising municipalities on development to balance growth with environmental health.

The proposed Lake Erie Regional Conservation Authority (covering 8 conservation authorities and 81 municipalities) is too large to be responsive and effective. The province should strongly consider smaller, more focused regional models that improve efficiency while preserving local knowledge and relationships. Local knowledge and relationships are crucial to understanding and preserving conservation areas and keeping our communities safe and healthy.
