I have serious concerns with this proposal and I am writing to let you know I am 100 percent against this amalgamation idea. You have not presented a viable business case, offered any funding or consulted with the people who do this important work.
I'm deeply concerned about whether the needs of rural communities and the agricultural sector will be adequately recognized and prioritized in this consolidation, particularly since the lead Conservation Authority is expected to be an urban one in each region.
What is really needed is a renewed collaborative relationship among the province, municipalities, and Conservation Authorities to focus on restoring healthy, resilient watersheds. Local board members are accountable to communities and have insight into the area and the challenges it faces. Communities hold the CAs fiscally responsible.
Our landscape is changing. There is increased exposure to flooding and erosion hazards. Housing needs are increasing. Different municipalities have different needs because of geographical differences, river flows, population and coastlines. The cost to transition to this new agency could be exorbitant.
What will happen to land privately donated to conservation authorities if the province's plan goes ahead. Many of these lands were given with the explicit intention of being managed and protected locally.
