I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed consolidation of Ontario’s 36 local Conservation Authorities (CAs) into 7 massive regional bodies. This drastic restructuring—cutting the number of independent authorities by over 80%—poses a severe threat to our province’s ability to manage biodiversity loss, watershed flooding, and climate resilience.
Watershed management must be local to be effective. Merging 36 authorities into 7 creates "extreme consolidation" where a single body, such as the proposed Huron-Superior Regional Conservation Authority, would oversee 80 municipalities across 23,400 square kilometers—stretching from Grand Bend to Thunder Bay. Decisions made by distant bureaucrats cannot reflect the unique ecological needs of local communities.
