The proposed amalgamation of Conservation Authorities (CAs), under the premise that it will improve access to resources, is a flawed approach that raises significant concerns and leaves many critical questions unanswered. Conservation Authorities play an essential role within their local communities, from managing and responding to region-specific environmental challenges to delivering education, outreach, and environmental stewardship programs tailored to local needs.
By expanding the geographic scope and governance of Conservation Authorities, this proposal fundamentally alters the relationship between CAs and the communities they serve. It risks undermining the assurance that decision-making is grounded in local knowledge, long-standing relationships, and an understanding of watershed-specific conditions. This loss of localized expertise may lead to less effective environmental management, reduced responsiveness to community concerns, and decisions that do not reflect the unique ecological and social realities of each region.
Furthermore, amalgamation may weaken public trust and engagement by creating greater physical and administrative distance between communities and their Conservation Authorities, making communication less accessible and accountability less transparent. Rather than strengthening Conservation Authorities, this restructuring risks diminishing their effectiveness, eroding community confidence, and compromising the very environmental protections they were established to uphold.
