Community-based conservation works because it is local, accountable, and grounded in deep, place-specific knowledge. The Hamilton Conservation Authority exemplifies this model, with a long-standing record of effective stewardship, timely response, and public service precisely because it is embedded in the community and the watershed it protects.
This proposed consolidation is being advanced without credible evidence that it will improve environmental outcomes. Replacing proven local authorities with larger, more centralized structures will weaken accountability, slow responses to urgent environmental issues, and erode the quality of conservation oversight. At a time of escalating climate risk and environmental stress, Ontario should be reinforcing successful, community-based authorities like the HCA, not dismantling the systems that are already working.
