I am writing in regard to transferring the ownership of reserved trees to private landowners. These trees belong to the people of Ontario – why would Ontario be giving them to the landowner without receiving fair/any compensation? The current landowner bought the property knowing they didn’t own the trees.
Further, I understand that Ontario doesn’t have a good valuation of these trees (i.e. how many reservations there are, and how many trees are reserved). How can Ontario, in good conscious, give up the value of the reserved trees without even knowing what that value is?
Waving all tree reservations is also, potentially, a substantial financial gain to the landowner. While not all landowners are considered wealthy, they are certainly wealthier than the many Ontarians who don't own land. Releasing the reservations doesn’t seem ‘fair’ to those of us who aren't landowners? And what about trees reserved to the Crown on mining patents, or land owned by large industrial companies? Those reservations shouldn’t be waived.
