The proposal states, “The resort currently uses wastewater treatment comprised of a septic system, holding tanks and a subsurface disposal bed. The existing system does not have adequate capacity to accommodate current and potential future flows. This requires that additional wastewater treatment capacity be developed.”

While I understand the need to increase capacity in order to accommodate current and future flows, I fail to see why Searchmont Ski Resort can’t just upgrade the existing septic system and add more or larger holding tanks rather than developing a new wastewater treatment system that dumps effluent into the Goulais River.

We do not want wastewater effluent dumped into the Goulais River for a variety of reasons. The Goulais River is used for fishing, swimming, boating, and many other recreational activities and this wastewater disposal will reduce the quality of water in the river for all who use it.

The Goulais River and surrounding area, including Lake Superior, is home to many native animals and plants, wetlands, and is a delicate ecosystem that would be negatively affected by the introduction of wastewater effluent into the river.

There has to be a better solution to Searchmont Ski Resort’s need to upgrade their wastewater management system than dumping effluent into the Goulais River. This current proposal is unacceptable.
