I'll make my comment short and sweet because I've already sent my share of emails and collected signatures for petitions.
I've attended all the meetings to date and have been apprised of all the relevant information. It seems to me that the MOE is making misguided decisions based on inaccurate or weak data collected from the water samples in primarily one location on the Goulais River; Under the bridge on Hwy. 17, which is UPSTREAM of the most polluted part of the river. Unfortunately, it is already a well established fact that the Goulais River is already at its maximum capacity with regards to the levels of toxins found in the samples. The old garbage dump on Pineshores road was closed ~20 years ago, not due to over capacity, but SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE of the toxins leaching into the river across the road. In fact, residents in the area were forced to sell their home because water samples failed to meet standards. In other words, if new samples were taken down stream of the old dump today, it would be a foregone conclusion that dumping any kind of effluent into the Goulais river would not only raise levels of harmful toxins beyond acceptable levels, but would raise them so dramatically, that public health warnings for residents would become part of everyday life and the class action lawsuits that inevitably follow them.
This comment is not meant to cast shade on the development of the facilities at the Searchmont Ski Resort which the residents of Goulais enjoy too. But it is a collective message from all of us who have lived in the area for years, some for generations, who do not want to see the further degradation of the river. There must be a better solution for dealing with sewage from the resort!
