🚩 The proponents (Searchmont Ski Resort) used the bridge on Hwy 17 as their downstream location to collect water samples from Goulais River for their water quality monitoring program.
🚩 This data is the backbone of the Assimilative Capacity Study.... Used to prove that Goulais River can safely receive and breakdown waste.
🚩 Their own data set shows that Total Phosphorus is already at the Provincial Water Quality Objective.....
🚩 The MECP acknowledged Total Phosphorus being at limit at the PWQO and noted... "As per MECP receiver policies, this concentration should not be allowed to increase...."
🚩🚩 What's more.... the river does not end there... It flows well past the bridge on Hwy 17 and down into Goulais Bay.
🚩🚩🚩 Which is known to receive boil water advisories. In fact.... The last one was in May of 2025. Noted to be a result of natural discharge from the Goulais River from snow melt, rain etc.
Soo Today writes:
"The exceedance is attributed to seasonal runoff caused by recent snowmelt and rainfall, which has impacted water clarity. Turbidity refers to the cloudiness or haziness of water and is a common occurrence during this time of year due to natural discharge from the Goulais River."
🚩🚩🚩🚩 Total Phosphorus (TP), especially high levels of TP significantly increase turbidity in water bodies. Which is why the government has a Provincial Water Quality Objective for TP.
As a resident with property on the river close to the resort I am very concerned with this proposal. Our family and friends recreate in the river of a regular basis.
Thank you
